Thor-Shackel History
The Thor-Shackel Horseradish Company has been privately owned and operated since it was founded by Mr. Thor and the Shackel brothers in 1910. The company set up operations within Chicago’s famous, “Randolph Street Farmer's Market,” which gave the company access to the most select horseradish roots.
The company created the “Thor's” brand name for marketing its prepared horseradish. This name was selected in order to create recognition of the product’s quality and character by identifying it with the prominence and high profile of Mr. Thor who was, at the time, a respected civil servant in the political scene of Chicago.
The Shackel Brothers were in charge of manufacturing operations and distribution until the 1940’s when the company was purchased by the Radic family and a single non-family investor. Mr. Radic relocated the operation into a facility with in-house refrigeration and then developed automated horseradish root processing.
By the 1950’s, Mr. Radic established Thor Farms to start growing his own horseradish in the country’s prime horseradish growing area of southern Illinois. He wanted to remain true to the company’s founding fathers and produce the highest quality horseradish available and gain more expertise in assessing and certifying other local sources of high quality horseradish.
During the next several years, the company expanded its product line by introducing Thor’s cocktail sauce and horseradish sauce, both of which featured the distinct characteristics of Thor’s hot horseradish.
Silver Spring will now produce Thor’s Hot Horseradish, Thor’s Nippy Horseradish Sauce, Thor’s Prepared Beet Horseradish, Thor’s Cocktail Sauce with respect for the tradition we inherit and uncompromised attention to quality. Silver Spring will sell the Thor product line to grocery and finer food stores.
