SILVER SPRING FOODS ADDS 1 MILLION POUNDS OF HORSERADISH WITH BREDE FOODS ACQUISITION

March 18, 2020

Will Continue to Offer Farmers Brand of Horseradish Products Nationwide

EAU CLAIRE, WI – March 18, 2020 -- Silver Spring Foods, a subsidiary of Huntsinger Farms, the world’s largest grower and processor of horseradish, today announced it has acquired Brede Foods, a popular family-owned horseradish company based in Detroit, Michigan. Silver Spring will add Farmers Brand of horseradish products to its family of brands, which include Silver Spring, Kelchner’s, and Bookbinder’s.

With the Brede Foods acquisition, Silver Spring increases its horseradish supply by 1 million pounds, an almost 12 percent increase. In addition, by continuing to offer the Brede family recipe in the Farmers brand, Silver Spring adds more than 1,000 new storefronts nationwide to its retail footprint.

The additional horseradish will help Silver Spring close the gap for customers impacted by the national shortage of the increasingly popular condiment and ingredient, caused by harsh weather in 2019. (link to last press release here)

“We are excited to be adding Brede Foods to our family of brands,” said Eric Rygg, president of Silver Spring Foods. “Not only will the additional horseradish root supply help us close the gap in today’s short market, it will be instrumental in our ability to continue to grow the national market for horseradish as a condiment and as an ingredient in flavor-filled sauces and mustards.”

He added, “Brede and Silver Spring have been friendly competition who have helped each other over the years for three generations. It’s an honor for Mike Brede to have chosen us as the company who would buy this great, family-owned company.”

Brede Foods was founded in 1923 by Edwin Brede and has been a family-owned company ever since. Edwin’s son John Brede took over the company in 1964, and John’s son Michael (Mike) Brede, with Mike’s wife Sue, bought the company from his father in 1995. Since Mike Brede took over running the company, he expanded the product line with additional mustards and sauces, dramatically increased the national footprint of the company’s two brands, Brede Family and Farmer’s, and more than doubled company revenue.

According to Brede, neither of his and Sue’s sons, nor his four siblings want to pursue owning the company, which made selling the company a no-brainer.  When considering who would be a good match for the company, Silver Spring, also a family-owned company, was at the top of the list.

“Brede Foods and Silver Spring have shared a long history of co-opetition and partnership. We share the same values, and our product lines are similar in philosophy and profile,” said Mike Brede, president and CEO of Brede Foods. “Sue and I are proud that Silver Spring sees the value in what our family built, and that our family recipes will continue under new ownership. I’m very thankful to our employees who have helped us achieve so much, and to my wife Sue who has been a true business partner throughout the years.”

Brede plans to retire and spend more time with his and Sue’s children and five grandchildren. They also plan to spend more time Up North enjoying all that Michigan has to offer.

The Farmers brand products will maintain the Brede family recipe. “As horseradish grows in popularity it’s important to offer a range of heat levels and taste profiles,” added Rygg. “The Brede family recipes are excellent, and we are excited to be able to add them to our portfolio.”

The Farmers Brand horseradish line will be processed and bottled in Silver Spring Foods’ state-of-the-art food processing plant in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, which was built to accommodate future growth.

Brede added, “I know there’s a great future in the horseradish business. My 2-year-old granddaughter dips her food into prepared horseradish and loves the ‘spicy’ flavor.”

Mike Brede will stay on as an advisor to Silver Spring Foods to ensure a smooth transition for the company and customers.
